Sublime Prime(r)

As you’ll know from my previous post I recently went to Paris and had the opportunity to visit one of the Sephora stores there. I was really impressed with the wide range of brands that they had, the layout and the overall vibe in there. Having recently stocked the Fenty Beauty range the store was heaving with people ready to purchase the newest and coolest make-up range to hit the shops. Apart from bagging myself one of Rihanna’s new make-up products I also invested in the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

urban decay eyeshadow primer potion

I’ve come to know and trust Urban Decay’s products over the years so was silently confident that this primer wouldn’t disappoint. When I first felt the product on my finger tips I found it to feel quite thin and silky and had a doubt as to whether it could handle not only my hooded but also sometimes oily eyelids. In my experience I’ve also found that there are some eyeshadow primers that only work well with shimmery or glittery eyeshadows as they adhere better but are a let down when matte eyeshadows are in the picture. This isn’t the case with this, it has a small wand brush that makes it super easy to apply on your lid and you need very little. I smooth it out with a concealer brush and give it a few seconds to set then begin applying my eyeshadow. The primer keeps my eyeshadow put all day and it doesn’t matter if its a cheap eyeshadow or one of the more upmarket ones, the results are the same.

I wanted to use this a few times before reviewing it just to be sure that I really do like it and that it actually works and I’m pleased to say it does. I should also add that the beige colour of the primer works very well on dark skin tones too as I know the other Urban Decay primer is lighter and can as a result make your eyeshadows look lighter and brighter than intended.

Overall, I’m pleased with this product and would buy it again. Hope you’ve enjoyed my review, please do let me know your thoughts, comment below or drop me an email at fuschiasequins@gmail.com

Match?

So Rihanna has launched her make-up range and we are absolutely loving it. The range of colours and the variety of products has got everyone super excited and I must admit I cant wait to try it out for myself.

Fenty Beauty Foundation

But when shopping for a new beauty product what are some of the things that you look out for that tell you whether its going to be a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’. Apart from testing a product on the back of your hand and possibly trying it on how can you be sure that what you are getting is worth parting with your precious pounds?

It can be a game of trial and error with lots of artificial lighting at cosmetic booths and the lure of all these beautiful shades that feel right when you’re in the store. I’d say don’t rush it but rather ask for a sample (especially foundation and concealer) and test it at home or pop out of the store and take a look in the day light. By doing this you’ll quickly be able to spot if a colour is ashy for your skin or if the undertone is right for you.

From experience I’ve found that some of the foundation brands develop the darker shades of foundation with a very red/orange undertone that can be rather unflattering in daylight but looks great under artificial light, so do watch out for this.

For eyeliners a test on the back of your hand is sufficient. A good eyeliner shouldn’t run when you draw a line on the back of your hand. Also wait for it to dry on your hand to see what the finished product will look like – is it really black or more of a dull grey?

The same can be said of primers too, put a little on the back of your hand and rub in gently. Once dry, asses how it feels, is it too drying? Too glossy? Decide the make-up look you’d like to go for whether is matte or dewy and buy accordingly.

I hope this helps you when make-up shopping. If you have any questions please do feel free to ask in the comments section or via email fuschiasequins@gmail.com.

My top 4 products for

When I first realised that I had an oily t-zone I tried lots of different methods to keep my skin shine free throughout the day. I later learnt that having a good skin care routine before applying my makeup was just as important as the foundation I wore and any blotting powder or paper that I could buy. Although this may sound obvious fried and oily foods doesn’t help oily skin and regular exercise can also help keep your oily skin at bay. Do some research into the foods that can help and see how you can adjust your diet to help.

So aside from the things you can do on the inside here are the primers that I like to use that keep my skin shine free:

I used the No. 7 primer for a few years and I really liked it. With a pearly cream texture its easy to work into the skin with your fingers. For me it doesn’t quite last all day and I did find my oily skin breaking through after about 6 hours. You can purchase this from Boots

MAC’s prep + prime spray is the primer and finisher i’m currently using because i like the finish it gives my make up. I don’t use pressed powders on top of my foundation/concealer so I like the dewy finish that this gives me yet still manages to keep my oily skin at bay. Available at MAC

Kiko’s mat base really surprised me because I wasn’t expecting it to be as effective as it was. My reservation about it is that it dries incredibly hard and even when I use just a little it feels really harsh on my skin. I tend not to use it so much now but I know i can really on it for really long days when I just have to stay shine free. Note that with this primer your application must be smooth as it can affect the finish of your foundation. Available here Kiko

This is one of my cheap favourites, Rimmel’s primer feels just like applying a cool moisturiser to your face. Although its hold on oil doesn’t last all day it is effective for between 4-5 hours. This primer does well not to suck all moisture from your skin and is so smooth to apply meaning that your foundation will look flawless too. Available at Boots

I hope this helps you. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve tried any of these primers or you have some to recommend that have worked well for you.

Have a great week!

Levels to save time

Depending on how long I have to get ready to leave the house I have developed a ‘level’ grading of what to include or leave out of my make up regime. I thought I’d share my level 1 or basic make-up routine with you and I hope it will help you too.

The Level 1: This is the very basic make up and should take about 20 minutes to complete. I begin by preparing my skin using Kiko Mat Base Corrector Primer. I always always prime my face, no matter how little the make-up, if you have oily skin your foundation will last longer when you’ve prepared your skin well.

I then fill in my brows using the Sleek Browkit. This can be done fairly quickly with a good angled brush, you can pick a good one up at Superdrug for a few pounds. Once I have done this I define my brows using a flat brush from Kiko number 210 using a drop of MAC’s pro longwear concealer mixed with my foundation. I mix the concealer and foundation for a more natural look and to avoid the light halo effect around my eyebrows.

Using a medium sized concealer brush I then blend around the brows to smooth in the concealer/foundation into the area around my brows. I also use this same mixture on my dark areas (underneath my eyes) and moving out along my cheek bone- this is pretty much all the contour I’ll do. You can choose to add some of this vertically down the centre of your face from the middle of your forehead, down your nose and a dab on the middle of your chin to create more contrast. Always blend in with a make up sponge.

Once I’ve defined , I grab my Sephora colourful eyeliner in black and apply. I like my liner to be bold and clean and as I’m not wearing any eyeshadow or lashes, my liner should make the statement :). I follow this with some mascara.

After this I apply my foundation using Zoeva’s brush 104, this gives a beautifully smooth finish.

Then I apply my favourite lip liner and lipstick and I’m ready to go!

With some practice this should take 20 minutes or less and is a great quick make-up routine to complete when you’re in a rush.

Have a great day!

My 4 make-up essentials

Okay so these are my favourite products in my make-up collection at the moment 🙂

1. No.7 Beautifully Matte Make-Up Base- I love using this primer, it gives a great base for applying my foundation and stops shine. I use it on my oily t-zone which is my forehead, nose and chin. I use it quite sparingly as I feel it’s more effective that way. You can purchase one from any big boots

2. Rimmel Exaggerate Eye Liner- I have tried sooo many different eye liners in search of that perfect shade of black. There are some that dry matte and look almost grey and there are some that dry with a slight sheen. This Rimmel liquid eyeliner has such a beautiful finish. It drys very matte and is extremely dark. I like using this eyeliner when I’m teaming it with a dark or a red lippy. It has a short nib which makes it easier to apply if you’re an eyeliner beginner. You can purchase this from Superdrug or Boots.

3. Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer- this is a new find for me but this keeps my eyeshadow in place alllll day and the great thing is it also works as a lovely eyeshadow colour on its own too. You only need to apply a very small amount before you put on your eyeshadow. What I like to do is use my fourth finger to gently rub the primer across my entire eye lid until there’s an even spread but you can also use a small concealer brush.

4. MAC MatchMaster Foundation- Last but not least is MAC’s MatchMaster foundation. I really like the finish that this liquid foundation gives me. I’ll admit I don’t think it’s the absolute perfect match for my tone but it’s the closest one I’ve found so far. I don’t wear this on its own though, I add a little Select Sheer Pressed Powder on top to give me an even smoother finish. You can purchase this from all MAC stores or online.

Have a lovely weekend (despite the rain)!
